I love dropping by garage sales and estate sales to search for old cook books, they’re always chalk full of strange and dated recipes. One of my recent finds is the Better Homes and Gardens Barbeque Book (1969). In the back of the book they’ve got a great drinks section which includes Pineapple Mallowade. By now you’ve guessed the ingredients and are likely making faces of disgust, but you should really give it a try as it isn’t half bad. Really.

24 marshmallows
1 cup of water
2.5 cups of unsweetened pineapple juice
1/4 cup of lemon juice
Dash of salt
3.5 cups gingerale (chilled)

Place marshmallows and water in the top of a double boiler. Heat over boiling water till marshmallows are melted; stir occasionally. Blend in fruit juices and salt. Mix well; chill. Add ginger ale just before just before serving. Pour into ice-filled glasses. Serves 6 to 8.

It’s been a while since I first read about Coca Cola Blak, but today was the first time I’ve had a chance to try it (thank you Cybercandy). Coke and coffee make a really weird combination and I’m pretty sure I’ll never buy it again. I would imagine that this flavour fusion will disapear quickly as so many drinks have. In fact, according to my wife…it sets a new standard for coffee breath.

Sainsbury’s has passion fruits (4 for 99p) at the moment. It’s very rare than you can find them in our area, and it’s even more rare that they taste good. I was pleasantly surprised this morning when we went to pick up stuff for breakfast. It will remind you of summer, even if it is pissing down with rain.

7 Passion fruits
1 cup of orange juice (fresh)
1 whole pineapple

Put all of the ingredients into a blender, blend and serve. Easy and tasty.

Tasty and thick summer drink. It’s like a meal in a glass, and great for breakfasts with a bagel.

3 peaches (halved and destoned)
3/4 punnet of strawberries
4 tablespoons of honey

Blend all of the ingredients together and serve.

Another drink that tastes like summer, and is perfect for all of the strawberries hitting the shelves in the local supermarkets. It’s very quick and is great for parties. Also good as a toping for ice cream…just remove the sugar.

1 punnet of strawberries (take the green bits off)
3 tablespoons of sugar
1 cup of water

In a blender/mixer blend the strawberries and sugar together until smooth. Add in the water a little at a time until you get the consistency you want. Blend again.

There are 2 ways to serve this. As in the picture, pour into a wine glass and serve fresh. Or pour the mixture into a 9X13 pyrex dish and put it into the freezer. Keep checking, and when it reaches a solidish state (when you can scrape lines into it and they stay) scrape the mixture into small bowls and serve with a sprig of mint.

Summer in a glass. When it’s hot and you’re looking for something to quench your thirst, this is it. I would imagine that you could probably add vodka if you wanted, but I like the clean fresh taste of the virgin drink. Quick and easy and good for summer parties.

1 Bag of crushed ice (or enough to fill a large jug)
1/2 cup of sugar
Juice from 2 lemons
Juice from 1 lime
4 or 5 leaves of fresh mint

1. Add all of your ingredients except the mint to a blender and blend together until relatively smooth. If you don’t have a blender I find that putting your ingredients into the jug and bash it like you would spices with a mortar and pestle, with the small end of a rolling pin.
2. Once you have the ice broken into smaller bits, add in the mint and blend until broken up…don’t do it too small though.
3. Serve in large tumblers with a sprig of fresh mint to garnish.
