Fresh figs!
June 25th, 2008 | Written by jfolkmann | Topic: appetiser, SidesAlthough typically only available at the end of the August, I decided to have a little treat and buy some fresh figs (from Italy). This wonderfully healthy snack is full of fiber, possasium, calcium and iron. They’re also amazingly versatile in the kitchen; equally excellent in sweet and savoury dishes. My personal favourite is to drizzle them with a bit of honey and pop them under the broiler for 10 minutes. I can’t wait until they’re a bit easier to find so we can have them more often. Bring on the summer!
Strange fig fact: “Neither bees nor wind contribute to the pollination of figs. Instead, a unique species of wasp, only about 1⁄8 in. (3 mm) long, pollinates the flowers as it enters and exits through the small pore on the rounded end of the fig.” – Readers digest
