Are you ever in need of inspiration as to what food matches another? foodpairing.be is an interesting little service that highlights those combinations that make the most sense.

They say:

Food combines with each other when they have major flavour components in common.

This would be great as a massive wall chart, in fact there are probably many different information visualisation techniques that could be used for this information. Great stuff.

It's amazing how many different mints have surfaced in the last few years. Just about every coffee chain has their own variety and what seems like hundreds of "luxury" options are available - Altoids, Oral fixation, and Hint to name a few.

Our local coffee shop sells Sencha Naturals green tea mints. In all honesty I was intrigued by the packaging (sucker!) and had to buy some ($6.95). I opted for the pear variety (which is lovely) and i'll be going back to get the other kinds.

I find this end of the candy market facinating...what's next micro organic candy makers?

We had the fortunate opportunity to eat at the Vintage Chophouse (Calgary,Canada) this past Saturday night. The place was packed, the service was amazing, and the food was just as good. I opted for the prime rib - served with a rosemary Yorkshire pudding and roasted mushrooms. The steak was tender, and cooked to perfection.

My wife chose the very seasonable White truffle risotto. Neither of us had ever tried anything made with the fungus. The risotto was wonderfully al dente, with hints of lemon with nothing overpowering amazingly pungent flavour of the truffle. It was well worth the price ($50/plate), which apparently has been pushed up by a poor growing season this year. White truffles can run between $800 and $1500 per pound, it's almost like shaving diamonds on to your plate.

Overall we had a lovely evening and will be returning as often as the wallet allows.

I hear it's sometimes tough to know which wine is supposed to go with which food. A San Francisco company has launched a range of wines that make the appropriate pairing clear as day. With titles such as "wine that loves grilled steak" and "wine that loves pasta with tomato sauce" you won't have to search the shelf very long to find exactly what you're looking for. As a non-wine drinker it's almost impossible to buy a gift without asking everyone in the wine shop for advice, this would certainly help if the wine is quality. I'll have to get a couple of bottles and get some friends to do a test once they deliver to Canada (please).
